About 40 km from the French town of Cerbère, we wanted to see a Spanish natural park, Cap de Creus, in Catalonia. According to the available information, motorhome entry is prohibited in the last section, approximately 6 km. But there is a regular bus from the town of Cadaqués. Thanks to such information, we discovered an enjoyable place to park and spend the night in this picturesque town, only 250 m from the house of Salvador Dali, who lived here for 50 years and whose house is now a well-visited museum. The area around Tossa de Mar is part of the Massís de les Cadiretes Nature Reserve. We decided between hiking up its highest hill, Puig de les Cadiretes, and hiking along the coast. Convenient parking on the edge of the town agreed to the coast, and we didn’t regret it. More here: Tossa-de-mar-in-catalonia-spain
In the protected area “Parc Natural de les Capçaleres del Ter i del Freser” in the north of Catalonia, we discovered a valley considered a hidden gem. It is called Vall de Núria. More information here: Vall-de-nuria-in-catalonia-spain
After a relatively demanding program in Catalonia, we needed a little rest. And we found a place – tailor-made for this purpose. The village of San Esteban de Litera in the Aragon region offered everything we needed. More information: Ermita-san-isidro-in-san-esteban-de-litera-aragon-in-spain
On the edge of the protected Aragonese area, “Parque Natural de la Sierra y los Caňones de Guarra,” there are two gems in one. The town of Alquézar is considered one of the most beautiful in Spain, and the Pasarelas del Vero hiking trail that starts there is listed among the 15 most beautiful hiking trails in Spain. We couldn’t miss such a chance to see both gems at once.
Montserrat is a well-known place most visitors to Barcelona, about 40 km south, will probably head to. This place was also on our itinerary, but not because of the main attraction that attracts tourists. We headed to Montserrat mainly because of the protected area of the Parc Natural de la Muntanya de Montserrat. The Spanish Picos de Europa National Park is also known for having a hiking trail considered the most beautiful in Spain, including the islands. It’s called Senda del Río Cares, named after the Cares River, over which the canyon trail runs. Whether it is the most beautiful Spanish – we cannot judge, but clearly, it is unique. We have not walked like this in the tens of years we have been “running” in the mountains. Preparing for this hiking trail mainly meant figuring out the logistics as we traveled by motor home. In the end, everything worked out, including the weather. More photos and a map of the trail here: https://rvingnationalparks.com/senda-…
The Valencia region is rich in natural beauty, such as waterfalls and caves. You just have to choose. We chose this cave. It’s called La Cueva de las Palomas. And we didn’t regret it. More photos and information, including map of the trail here: https://rvingnationalparks.com/la-cue…
The beauties of nature do not always and necessarily have to be part of protected areas. In the “ordinary” Sierra de Albarracín mountains – south of the Alto Tajo Natural Park – we walked a hiking trail through the Río Blanco river canyon, which in its beauty is comparable to the most beautiful and protected ones. Its start is in the small village of Calomarde, which also has a pleasant and relaxing parking lot with overnight stays for motorhomes. We write more about it here: https://rvingnationalparks.com/canyon…. Our wandering through Spanish national parks and protected natural areas also included the Alto Tajo Natural Park. And it was precisely the case when you don’t expect much, but in the end, the area’s beauty hit us so hard that, in our eyes, it overtook other, much more famous parks. Las Bardenas Reales Natural Park was the first semi-desert we visited in Europe. We had previously stayed in semi-desert areas in the western USA, so we were looking forward to this European semi-desert. This unique and fascinating natural park in the Navarra region offers badlands, a dry terrain with eroded hills, ravines, and bizarre rock formations.
